Waterfowl Photography Continued

The weekend has been filled with excellent opportunities to add more waterfowl to the portfolio. Colvin and I were pretty excited about the luck we have had over the past couple of weeks. Things really panned out. With waterfowl on the agenda, I took a moment to capture an American Tree Sparrow that was hopping around in some underbrush. I love the DoF on these shots.

It has been a great experience shooting this past month. I feel like I hone in on various skills each time I am out. I have appreciated the comments on my recent work. The feedback has been awesome. It is very difficult to capture these birds in flight and being able to share them with you is fun! Be sure to check out the other half at www.flytowater.com

Duck, Duck, GOOSE!

Hit the inlets with Colvin and scored a Canuck hat trick!  A break in the clouds gave us enough light to watch a few birds bomb in on our photo set.  It was great to have the opportunity of getting more flight shots.  Patience and persistence right?  Colvin is always able to throw down a great laugh and story!  Be sure to check out his epic tale of this mornings bird shoot www.flytowater.com .

Wood Ducks & Mallards

Brett Colvin and I started shooting waterfowl together last year.  Since shooting with Brett he has taught me lots about shooting birds on the camera.  This morning we took off on a “recon” trip in hopes of scouting out some water and finding some of the elusive Wood Ducks Brett has seen.  The scouting trip paid off and both of us were able to add a few images to the “folio”.  I have been trying to get some clean Mallard shots and Brett was excited about seeing a few of the Wood Duck Drakes!  The highlight of the day for me was knowing that I had a shot or two at getting some of the Drake Wood Ducks in flight on the D700.  After review they did not turn out as well as I had hoped, but Brett informed me of the difficulty level of getting this one and nailing it.  The Wood Ducks are very rare to find in the rockies and photographing one in flight…

Today was a great day!  Be sure to check out Brett’s fantastic images and the Drake he captured on the camera this morning.  The detail is incredible.  So is the Nikon f/2.8 300mm Prime.  www.flytowater.com I am sure he will be posting the pics soon!  Thanks again Brett!  Here is to many more days of shooting ~Cheers!

“Flaring” & Some…

I had a chance to go through some of my other images from over the weekend. I picked a few more to share.  Also,  “Colvin” has a nice little fish tale about the trip.  Be sure to check it out at:  http://www.flytowater.com/2009/11/drifting.html

I can’t wait to get out again.  The weather in UT has been fantastic.  It has made for some really nice photo opps.

The shot below has no post process other than my watermark & vignetting (for the inquiring minds).

One of the many flare shots I snapped. I put a little "retro" into this one.

Rodeo? – What A Catch

I spent the day with my great friend Brett Colvin.  I really enjoy fly fishing with Brett because we push each other.  This morning I watched Brett boat a couple of Behemoth trout.  Sticking “Bows” on an 8-wt fly rod is just SICK!  It was great to get some shots of the fish in the “Woody”.  By afternoon Brett and I were discussing different angles on the camera.  I was able to rip a set of images that I am excited to share.  I hope you enjoy them as well.
